Just Like Chicken Pox!

Recent news articles motivated me to remind you never to discuss politics, religion, person beliefs, etc. on job interviews. This could be akin to walking into an office while suffering from Chicken Pox!

Fact Checking!

Fact Checking, a term widely associated with political speeches of late, actually relates to the job search process as well.  Many companies take the information you provide as a candidate for employment, both on your resume and job application, and conduct research to verify it's accuracy.  Even the slightest inconsistency could lead you to losing out on a great opportunity.  It is critical to ensure all information you share with potential employers is accurate and truthful!

The focus here is on those inflexible beliefs about whole categories of people that keep us from seeing others accurately, from making fair and appropriate decisions, and from building the kind of harmonious relationships that make our lives more successful. Clearly, biases are bad news. On the other hand, the good news is that biases do not make us bad people. Human nature is to lump people into categories. Because of this predisposition, we are vulnerable to unconsciously believing the messages that bombard us from family, media, experience, and society as a whole. But we are not stuck with our unconscious biases; we can defeat them. This workshop is designed to address the hidden biases that can affect hiring, team building and challenges the ability to create inclusivity in both professional and personal settings. A 14 minute video accompanies this training and offers 5 simple, actionable, and memorable strategies to enhance workplace productivity and innovation by addressing bias. The authenticity and diversity of the scenarios utilized keeps participants attention, and the solutions suggested support change without blame. For more information contact Sylvia Velez at 1-908-630-3530 or email svelez@somersethillsymca.org.  The group meets every Tuesday evening, except Holidays. Everyone, at one point or another, wants to be known for something and whether we realize it or not all of us, in fact, already are. Consider when a family member, friend, business associate, or industry colleague thinks of us. Something comes to mind - an adjective, an emotion, an experience or encounter. These mental impressions are how they categorize us; this categorization becomes the reputation we have with them.. This reputation is how we are branded in the minds of those we know. If you are in career transition, carefully considering and designing your professional brand will be a useful tool that will help you articulate your aspirations to others and create the sound bites you want others to use when they speak of you in their networks. In this session, you will learn some of the foundational principles of designing your professional brand and then practically apply those concepts through in-session exercises and engagement. Attend this provoking and motivational presentation and you will:
·         Have a greater understanding of the principles related to creating their professional brand
·         Design (or redesign) their own professional brand statement using practical strategies
·         Gain greater clarity on what they want at this stage of their career and how they want to be known
