April Reminders for Resume Writing

From time to time, I feel it is important to discuss resume writing, as it is a topic that comes up frequently when speaking with coaching clients, applicants for jobs, and hiring managers.  Quite honestly, there is not such a thing as a perfect resume!  There are, however, some things you can do to make your resume work for you!

Never submit your LinkedIn Profile in lieu of an actual resume.  This makes you look lazy and unmotivated to be successful. The profiles give a snapshot of who you are but not the whole story.

While being multi-lingual is a wonderful attribute, your resume needs to be written completely in the native tongue of the country you are applying for work within.

Keeping a resume to one page is a myth. Preparing a resume of over three pages in length is not favorable either.  The key is to have enough pertinent information on page one to get the reader to continue onto the next page!

Your current contact information must be available.  If a phone number is no longer in service and the email address bounce back, most hiring managers / recruiters will not bother with snail mail.

Spellcheck can be your worst enemy.  It does not think for itself and could easily lead to embarrassing situations!  Read the resumes two or three times, have someone else read it, then read it yourself again before using it.

Never include your Social Security number on your resume! Identify theft is a growing business which you do not want to support.

There are numerous other resume tips but these came to mind today in an effort to help you think before you create!  Good luck!

Dealing With a Tight Work Force

Hiring managers constantly lament that the pool of qualified candidates for their current staffing needs is thinner than ever.  Not only are they finding the quantity to be quite low but the level of experience available is lacking.

As the media and government both keep telling us, unemployment in the U.S. remains historically low.  Beyond that, the recession of 2008 pushed many people to either retire early or leave their lifetime careers behind to pursue other fields.  This has left all of us with a rather enormous void of candidates to fill mid-level jobs in our country.

Recruiters know ways to identify qualified passive job seekers and also how to read between the lines of someone's work history to find you qualified individuals.  Of course, staffing firms charge placement fees to find permanent hires and hourly rates to supply temporary or contract staff.  In most cases, the cost of engaging a recruiter is more cost effective than conducting your own search.

Should you wish to hear more about how my recruiting skills can assist you, please email to harold@smartstaff.jobs or call me at 908-508-0300, ext. 104.

Attention Needed!!!

A candidate sent me their resume in response to my posting for a Recruiter to join our office's team.  Twice in the same resume, the person referred to their job title as Recuriter!!

Spelling errors are an ugly fact of life which I refuse to accept. If someone cannot properly spell the role they are seeking, I have a huge problem with this.  Paying attention to details is extremely critical and essential!

When only 2%-3% of job seekers who apply online get jobs, is that the way you want to spend your time? Rather than investing hours completing online applications, that time can be spent improving your attitude which translates into more positive results in cover letters, resumes, and, most importantly, interviews. The focus of this presentation will explore myths about older workers and provide sure-fire tips on how to get interviews by using the tried-and-true methods that Ginny used and saw 450+ over-55 individuals get jobs during her career with a Pa. Dept. of Labor program designed to put people 55+ back to work. Attendees will learn:
·         Ways to improve your attitude which is critical for older job seekers
·         Ways to determine which line of work to pursue if you are unsure
·         Ways to improve your resume that gets interviews
·         How to conduct a phone screen or phone interview to ensure you get the face-to-face interview
