Adventures in Staffing, Part 12

Before I entered the staffing field, my first years after college were spent in retail management. Apparently, I had the looks of a recruiter all the way back then when I was assigned to a team that was to build, staff and open a.new big box store. The GM designated me to oversee the hiring process. With the help of 2 admin staff borrowed from other locations, I was given one week to hire and assign over 300 people! The overwhelmingly large pool was not very talented. I learned the art of triage that week. If the candidate could fill out most of the application, dressed neatly, had a few references, and showed up for their second interview with proper identification, they were hired. The store was located in an economically depressed area and we chose to give the locals an opportunity to blossom. Some responded well while others were rapidly replaced. Sometimes, if people are given a chance, they will run with it. As a staffing manager, it is your role to decide who get that chance.

Adventures in Staffing, Part 11

Adventures in Staffing, Part 11: Warning signs, from my experience, are usually accurate. Today, I will give you a few different scenarios to think about. A rookie recruiter I was training found a gentleman to fill a vacancy for one of his clients. They told the recruiter they would offer the job pending a drug test. The candidate was angry and showed up at our door, claiming he was a volunteer first responder and should be exempt. I told him that he should not worry about the test if he had nothing to hide. He stormed off and we never heard from him again.

One time, I was trying to hire a career counselor to join my office. A candidate was referred to me by several colleagues. I sent her for a drug screening which came up positive. She told our HR rep that it must have been due to some cold medications (gave her benefit of doubt) she had taken. After a week, we set her up for a retest which she turned down saying she may have ingested some narcotics-laced baked goods by accident. At this point, the offer to her was rescinded.
A few other times, I have taken a chance even with warning signs and have been burnt on each occasion. As a recruiter or hiring manager, my best advice is to go with your gut each time. #jobsearch #jobmarket #WarningSigns

Bagels and Doughnuts

Adventures in Staffing, Part 10. In the 1980's and early '90's, the internet was pretty much a non-factor in the staffing world. We used thermal fax machines and IBM Selectric typewriters (with memory if you were lucky) as our top tools but there was a practice in place which had the highest success rate when putting a resume in front of a client. That method was best known as Bagels and Doughnuts! I would gather up four or five resumes, put them in a folder with my business card attached and head out of the office. En route, I would pick up some tasty bagels and/or doughnuts. About 85% of the time, the hiring manager and/or HR manager would greet you and review the resumes over breakfast. Other times, the front desk receptionist would enjoy a doughnut then make sure the rest of the food and resumes go placed prominently on their desk. During this pandemic, I would love to return to the basics of the staffing field. Elise Prezant Paul Cecala, Certified Career Coach Sheri D. Leach Shel Grossman Deborah Johnson John R.
