Placement Flashbacks (Memories from over 30 years in the staffing field). #8.

Frequently, I hear complaints about how difficult it is to find a job. Quite honestly, it has never been (and never will be) easy to find your next job or, in some cases, your first job.

Standing in the cold, waiting for my local supermarket to open on recent Sundays, as I attempt to be there when crowds are at their lowest to hopefully remain Covid free, made me think about my quest for my first full time job. As a senior at Franklin and Marshall College in 1980, I was given the opportunity to sign up for on-campus job interviews with a variety of employers.

In order to sign up, I was told to be there when the Student Services office opened at 8 AM one January morning. From word of mouth, I learned that arriving around 7:00 guaranteed you the best selection. I arrived at about 6:30 AM on a snow covered morning to find myself third in line outdoors! Happily, I defrosted in time to grab about a dozen interviews which led to three job offers! Obviously times have changed as have job search methodologies but that saying abo early birds still applies!

Placement Flashbacks (Memories from over 30 years in the staffing field). #7.

We tend to spend a lot of time discussing candidates who disappear into thin air. How about companies who request resumes for a job opening then are incredibly slow scheduling interviews?
Frequently, I hustle to submit resumes for an 'urgent' need then I hear nothing for 3+ weeks even with diligence on my part. By the time the hiring manager responds, it is inevitable that several candidates will be off the marketplace. Several years ago, I received a call from a hiring manager at a giant telecommunications firm. He asked to schedule an interview with a candidate who had been submitted by a former colleague. I located the candidate to find out that resume was submitted almost eighteen months earlier and he was not happily working overseas. The hiring manager was livid as HR had first told him of the candidate that week!
My advice is, to move as quickly to respond to resumes as possible and that hiring managers should keep tabs on Procurement/HR whenever possible.

Placement Flashbacks (Memories from over 30 years in the staffing field). #6.

Declining a job offer is acceptable as long as it is done properly. Backing out of a job after the candidate and employer (and staffing firm) have agreed upon a start date, especially at the last minute, is not.
I've had candidates set to start a job the following Monday who called at the end of the day Friday to say they have accepted a counteroffer (a topic for another day) and have decided to stay put. I've woken up to email, text or voicemail on the actual start date saying that the candidate suddenly changed their mind. The third scenario is where the candidate calls a day or two before the start date declaring a family emergency with a promise of daily updates as to when they can begin only to vanish forever!
The obvious ramifications are that the client has developed a sudden hole in their organization and the staffing firm has taken a potential serious hit to their reputation. The less obvious side effect is that this candidate has now tarnished their record permanently. Think twice about the impact a sudden decision to not start a job can have on everyone.

Placement Flashbacks (Memories from over 30 years in the staffing field). #5.

Placement Flashbacks (Memories from over 30 years in the staffing field). #5. I feel the need to deviate from a flashback to commenting on a topic brought to mind by the firing of the brand new General Manager of the New York Mets today.

Apparently, a few years back, as he was working his way up the management ladder with another baseball team, he met a newspaper reporter from Europe who had been sent to the U.S. to observe and write features about the sport. They met in person just once but she caught his attention, traded contact information with each other and agreed to meet for a meal. Her schedule caused her to miss the meeting but this budding executive kept texting and eventually became quite lewd and suggestive in his approach.

The reporter shared her experience with someone from ESPN but asked them not to report as she was afraid of retribution in her homeland. The perpetrator spent several years in a high ranking position then was hired to rebuild the Mets in December. That motivated the victim of his behavior to come forward as she feared he would use his newly gained powers to mistreat other women. One day after the news broke, the Mets terminated him. The conclusion is that everything we do has the potential to remain part of our past digitally for eternity.

Placement Flashbacks (Memories from over 30 years in the staffing field). #4.

Placement Flashbacks (Memories from over 30 years in the staffing field). #4.

I learned a lesson roughly thirty-five years ago which still holds true today. A successful recruiter does not need to be capable of personally performing the job they are recruiting for. More importantly, they need to be able to ask strong questions of the hiring manager, willing to study resumes of candidates who do the work needed, perform some research on the industry, client, and role they are searching for. For example, my college degree was in Government but my first placements were a Motor Coil Re-winder, Computer Operator, Maintenance Mechanic, Welder among others. Understanding what makes a good candidate, what will satisfy your client, and how to comprehend which skills are important to possess in order to have a long career in the staffing world.

Placement Flashbacks (Memories from over 30 years in the staffing field). #3

Most placements follow the same lifecycle process from taking down a job order to identifying candidates, screening them and submitting resumes followed by setting up and managing the interview process and ultimately presenting an offer to seal the deal. Occasionally, they occur in a different manner. About 13 or 14 years ago, a specialty equipment manufacturer based in NJ asked me to find a highly unique sales manager to cover Florida and the Caribbean region for them. I managed to find the needle in the haystack and they had a few terrific phone interviews. The hiring manager had scheduled a business trip to South Florida which included an in-person interview. My assumption was that they would meet at a local eatery. Instead, my candidate hosted the client on his small boat and they combined the interview with a fishing trip where the offer was presented and accepted! One never knows what might work in the staffing field but flexibility is certainly needed!

Do any Recruiters reading this post remember the days of the pin board in agency offices? It consisted of a bulletin board to which the initials of all the Recruiters were listed to the left and across the top, columns were set up for Job Orders (White), Interviews (Blue), Offers (Red), and Acceptances (Green). Each day, someone added up and recorded the pins. On Friday, it was not unusual for those with the best numbers for the week to be offered the chance to start their weekend a few hours early. If your row on the board was predominantly full of white push pins week after week, the chances were good that you may not have a spot on the board much longer. Does anyone know of a firm still utilizing this method?

Wednesday, January 6, 2021 from 7:00-9:00 p.m.Jewish Family Service of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties is offering a Job Seekers Success Group for active job seekers who are unemployed, underemployed or seeking a career change.  The next group will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. This meeting will be held by virtual format via Zoom.

The topic for this session is “Overcoming Age Discrimination” presented by Ken Sher, President of Sher Coaching. Age discrimination is described as “treating an applicant or employee less favorably because of his or her age. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) forbids age discrimination against people who are age 40 or older.” So, it’s illegal to not offer a job because of age... but we all know that the reality is that it happens. But the reality, also, is that it’s still possible, and likely, that you will find an opportunity based on your great knowledge and experience that you’ve gained throughout your career... it just might take a little longer.

This group is offered free of charge and is open to the entire community.  Funding for this program is provided by grants from The Arnold A. Schwartz Foundation, Affinity Federal Credit Union and Magyar Bank. Registration is required to receive the Zoom invitation and to be admitted to the group.
