Quick Refresher Course For Successful Job Hunting

After a quiet autumn, the employment market this winter appears to be on the upswing! There are many small things you can do after your resume has caught the eye of a perspective employer to make you stand out. In no particular order, I have listed some pointers below.
  • Bring at least two hard copies of your resume with you in case someone asks to see one.
  • Carry a notepad and pen with you at all times so you may take notes during an interview when appropriate. Jot down the names of everyone you meet along the way.
  • Have a printed list of references available. Make sure the information on the list is accurate and that you have recently checked in with each person listed to ensure they are ready and willing to endorse you.
  • During the interview, answer all questions thoroughly and to the best of your ability but do not go off in other directions.
  • Research the company in advance and demonstrate tactfully your knowledge of their business and history.
  • Avoid discussions related to politics as this has always been a sore spot as we are all entitled to our opinions but no need to get into a debate.
  • At the end of the interview, ask what the next steps will be and feel free to actually ask for the job!
