Maintaining Great References

Many employers still insist on checking references before making an offer of employment. Verifying dates and position held are useful to some extent but I have learned that everything else garnered is subject to the perception of the individual providing the information. That being said, references are important and need to be treated that way when selecting names to be part of your list.
Keeping your reference list current is crucial. Many clients ask me to perform the reference checks for them. It is very annoying when both the contact phone number and email address for a contact are out of date. Periodically, check in with those you have selected to ensure you are still listing the best methods for reaching them to avoid confusion and frustration. While we are discussing this topic, please remember to let your references know when you are in active job hunting mode so they are not caught off guard when someone contacts them.
As always, make sure all components of your job search are in good working order. There is little room for error when it comes to improving your professional well being!
