Adventures in Staffing, Part 16

Counteroffers have always been a challenge to deal with from the perspective of a recruiter. Over the past 30+ years, countless candidates have accepted offers which I have made on behalf of clients then contacted me before the start date to say their current employee countered with more money.
My strategy is to ask the candidate to think about what just happened. The employer, who had not paid them what they were worth on the open market UNTIL the candidate received a better offer, suddenly threw a bunch of money at them. If the company was willing to be so generous, why did it take a resignation letter for this to occur?
Usually, people who take counteroffers are back at my doorstep in about six months as they were laid off. The employer either went out and found someone for less money or decided the person's net value had decreased. Before accepting a counteroffer, think about what made you decide to pursue outside opportunities and do some heartfelt soul searching!
