Adventures in Staffing, Part 27

Today's flashback takes me to 1987 when I placed a Machine Shop Foreman with a client company. As requested, I obtained five iron clad references which painted him as the best in the business. Unfortunately, he was fired in less than a month as it rapidly became apparent that his hands-on abilities were minimal at best. When called out on this, he admitted that he was primarily in a supervisory role at his last two employers and had a good team which covered for him. The moral of the story is, reference can tell you if someone is honorable, professional, shows up on time, etc. Unless the hiring manager properly techs out a candidate, they may be in for a surprise.
